ELOKA Update

New Guide on Data Management for Community-Based Monitoring

cover of brochure

Over the past decade, ELOKA has worked to develop a protocol to help community-based programs understand options in designing a relevant data management protocol for their knowledge and data. In collaboration with former ELOKA principle investigators Shari Fox, and Peter Pulsifer of Carleton University, ELOKA recently published a practical guide for northern Indigenous land-based programs that want to design and implement community-based data management systems. The guide drew on feedback from participants at the Indigenous Guardians Data Roundtable held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in January 2024.

“A Guide to Choosing and Using Community-Based Data Management Systems for Indigenous Land Based Programs” was created to lead programs through their planning stages, while considering important questions on building a data management system. The guide shares examples, practical tools, and lessons learned from over twenty years of collaboration between Indigenous communities, researchers, and software developers. ELOKA is currently collaborating with Pulsifer to develop a digital decision-support tool to help generate more tailored suggestions for programs designing data management systems.
