ELOKA Update

A new video about ELOKA partners

A short video has been published on the ELOKA website. The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA) program at NSIDC works to foster collaboration between Arctic residents and researchers. Part of this collaboration involves bringing partners together. In August 2023, ELOKA partners gathered at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF), and spent four days learning from one another, and shaping future goals and priorities for ELOKA. Partners traveled from different regions in Alaska, British Columbia and Labrador, Canada, and Finland.

During the meeting, partners were interviewed about their work and what it means to work ELOKA. Film students at University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Associate Professor and lead of FRAME productions Maya Salganek, and ELOKA team member Agnieszka Gautier worked together to produce this video. The video opens with the late Mark John from Calista Education and Culture, explaining how his Yup’ik culture is centered around sharing, which is an expression of love. Multiple partners follow, encapsulating the diversity and scope of projects across the ELOKA network. The video documents how bringing people together from different backgrounds can elevate similar efforts.

The film is accessible on the ELOKA homepage or YouTube.
